Preparation for Singapore

Psalm 139:14-18

I will give thanks to You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Wonderful are Your works, And my soul knows it very well. 15 My frame was not hidden from You, When I was made in secret, And skillfully wrought in the depths of the earth; 16 Your eyes have seen my unformed substance; And in Your book were all written The days that were ordained for me, When as yet there was not one of them. 17 How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O God! How vast is the sum of them! 18 If I should count them, they would outnumber the sand. When I awake, I am still with You.

I am excited to be heading off to Singapore on July 29th to begin a year-long survey trip. I will be serving under Ping Ngian at Grace Independent Baptist Church (http://www.gibc-sg.org/home.html) as an assistant/youth pastor. I praise the Lord for his providential leading through numerous circumstances up until today. I never would have predicted that I would one day be in Singapore. Ping and I met when I was in undergrad at Bob Jones University (I think when he became my hall leader 2nd semester of my Soph yr.). He became a great friend and leader in my life. I am very thankful that I will be able to be mentored under his leadership in my first year of full-time ministry.

There are many things to prepare for in my final months before I head into a new phase of life.

1. Even though I graduated with my Masters of Divinity from Detroit Baptist Theological Seminary on May 14th, I still need to finish my last class: Greek Exegesis of 2 Thessalonians. It’s only a two week block class during the last two weeks of June, but I need to try to get as much homework done as I can before then so that I can prepare for Singapore and visit my brother before I leave.

2. I am seeking to learn as much as I can about the history and culture of Singapore. I’ve read some good overviews about the country and am about to read a more detailed book about the country.

3. I am also reading up on church ministry and administration books. I want to be a good “Team Player.”

4. There are a lot of details to think through in order to move to Singapore for a year.  I think I have most of those details organized, but I’m sure it’s going to be busy up until the day I take off.

One other important thing to mention on my first blog:

I praise the Lord for providing for all of my needs – twice as much as I had planned for. GIBC has overwhelmed me already with their Christian hospitality – much more abundantly than I could have imagined. My home church and others have also contributed sacrifically on my behalf.

I am looking forward to growing in the Lord and depending upon him as I learn the work of the ministry in Singapore.
